If you are in Venice then you are pretty
close to everything. Unless you are staying near Sant'Elena you probably aren't going to be more than a mile away from anything.

Like someone else mentioned, I like tripadvisor.com for a lot of candid reviews from real people. Looking at that site, there are 12 hotels with room rates under $150 that are rated 4.5 (of 5 stars) by the travelers that use that site (3 of these hotels are on Lido).

This is a little off the topic. Sorry :/

Honestly, the hotels are NOTHING like American hotels. I live in Vegas so maybe my standards are a little high. I was a little surprised to see the hotels in Italy (Rome, Florence, & Vicenza) are VERY small. The 'Queen' sized bed is actually two twins put together.I stayed at a 4 star hotel in Florence and I woke up at 2am covered in mosquieto bites. So really where ever you stay will be the same. Small, No AC, Italian TV, and most of the time no shower, just a bath.

Also, if you can.. Florence is about 3 hours away, by train, and that is one hell of an experience! What a GREAT place to visit. Very easy to get around and the people are very friendly. Rome on the other hand.. Lets just say I'll never go back.

What do you consider "reasonably priced" and exactly when will you be here in Italy. Prices in Italy vary a lot depending on exactly what's going on when you arrive. The room I had in Venice at a 4 star just two or three minutes walk from Piazza San Marco was 150 euro per night the first weekend of Carnevale. The next weekend, the same room was 400 euro per night (I went home Saturday night and took the train back on Sunday that weekend). the next weekend when Carnevale had ended, the room was 80 euro per night. Today, it's back up to 130 per night.

I use the Venere.com site for hotels here in Italy. You can sort by area of the city, price, rating by past guests or other criteria. Venice is one of the more expensive places to stay here in Italy. Generally, the cheaper accomodations will be around the train station (Cannaregio Ovest) or on the Lido island. Some of the Lido places are quite nice for the price, but you'll have to take the boat to get into the main tourist areas of the city.

You could also consider staying on the mainland (e.g., Mestre) if price is your highest criteria.

Venice is an easily walked city or there are day passes (or longer) for the vaporetto to get around. Hotels very close to Piazza San Marco come at a premium, but there are at least 60 hotels in Venice that have available rooms right now for 60 euro per night or less. If you're trying to come when Il Reddentore will be going on in the middle of July, expect prices to be a lot higher. Venice is packed then - it's a very popular celebration.

It is one of the biggest tourist traps in the world. I consider it highly unlikely that ANYTHING in Venice is reasonably priced.
